Klein's death was as brutally horrifying as it was unexpected.
Bacteriologist, Dr Neil Anderson is asked by the hospital authorities to try and discover what disease could possibly have transformed a healthy medical student into a grotesque corpse within hours. His invesitigation uncovers an unlikely link between Klein's routine participation in testing a new drug and the research laboratories of Dr Jacob Strauss, one of the foremost medical scientists of his day.
Was Klein's death purely a medical mishap? Or was it, as Anderson begins to suspect, the result of something much more secret - and infinitely more sinister?
This book was first published by Collins/Fontana in the UK in 1986 and reissued by Pocket Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Ltd, in 1998.

THE SCORPION'S ADVANCE edition by Ken McClure Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I am a huge Ken McClure fan, and have read about five of his other novels all of which I loved. This one has been written almost three decades back, and the difference in the quality of writing and tautness in story telling is evident. His more recent works (like the Steven Dunbar series), are far more nuanced, polished, taut and focussed. He is a writer in the medical thriller genres, and that's where his strength lies.In this novel, however, the plot is slightly unbelievable since a humble medical student ends up getting caught between the CIA, Mosad, "terrorists" as well as a romance that seems to blossom suddenly within a few days without any depth in the narrative. This novel tries to be a lot of things it is not; McClure should have let it be a medical thriller rather than attempt a complex plot involving international criminals, spies, guns and bullets. Even the style of writing leaves something to be desired; scenes keep "jumping" from one moment to another within a matter of a few sentences, or suddenly between paragraphs.
All in all, average read.

Once I start a Ken McClure novel, I just cannot put it down. The Scorpion's Advance is another of his nail-biting medical thrillers, and is one of his best. I have read all of Ken McClure's books now, and can't wait for more.

Quite an enjoyable story. Fairly fast paced and held my attention to the end. I'll be reading more if Ken McClure's books.
This book was another intriguing read by a great author in Ken McClure. What attracts me to this author is his in depth knowledge of medical procedures and medications. It was his book "Trauma" that I first read with my new kindle and from then I was hooked Ken McClure
An excellent book that was hard to leave.
A wonderful medical suspense story. I was riveted to it. This author has so much knowledge of the medical field and keeps me up all night reading. For anyone that like medical suspense novels I highly recommend reading this author's books.
I so much enjoy Mr. McClure's books. Since I discovered him by accident about 2 years ago, I have read most of his books and never found him repetitive. Also told my bookvlub friends about him as well as other avid readers. His books are suspenseful with a hint of soft side...love them and highly recommended.
