Tales of the Minivandians (Audible Audio Edition) Tom Rogneby Adam McLaughlin Books

This is a personal project that mutated into a book and then a series. The book starts out with a number of vignettes, and then progresses into a novelette. Now there's a sequel and the promise of more.

The initial premise is a medieval take on suburban life. It's utterly original, enjoyable, and good for several laughs, with modern appliances named as if by knights of yore and of talking plumbing snakes dueling with remarkably sentient willow roots, along with a few cultural references thrown in for good measure.

But as the book progresses, the initial lightheartedness is quickly replaced by a more traditional take on fantasy. By the end of the book, you're in a typical sword and sorcery world, and a dark one at that. There is an implacable enemy, our protagonist's friends and heroes fall to evil, and in the end, one wonders how he, or indeed anyone, survived to become part of the tale. The nods to the modern world remain, but they are less and less relevant to the story, and, by the end, they are by no means humorous.

So, it's not only an interesting book, and an interesting journey on the part of the protagonist, but it's a glimpse into an interesting journey on the part of the author..

Tales of the Minivandians (Audible Audio Edition) Tom Rogneby Adam McLaughlin Books Reviews

Tales is an expansion of the short vignettes of every day life from (perhaps not so) ancient times, related by Mr. Rogneby on the web. I particularly enjoy the mystery of trying to figure out from his description what particular present-day occurance, mishap, adventure, or annoyance may have inspired a particular Tale, and I'm always amused when I figure it out. It's great fun. Having all of these stories not only collected into a book but expanded into a wonderful little universe makes Tales of the Minivandians a funny and highly entertaining read suitable for adults and children as well.
Starts out as a heroic fantasy retelling of day-to-day events, like dealing with backed up drains or adopting a puppy. About halfway through the book, develops into the back story of how Daddy Bear met Woman of Eyre and became a Minivandian, and fought against the invasion of the undead.
RUMINT says there is a "Minivanidans, Part II" in the works, I eagerly await it!
I'm enjoying the short stories and love the concept, but if the author were to eliminate every instance of the word "which" the narrative would be greatly improved. I guess it's a stylistic quirk, but I find it awkward and distracting.

After making the previous comment I read part of the book on the author's blogsite. It was great!. Apparently the kindle version has messed with the grammar and syntax, making it painful to read. Get the kindle version straightened out and I'd give the book 5 stars.
This is an anthology of stories depicting the daily grind of life in suburbia, as seen through a fantasy filter. The stories are entertaining, and remind me of the time I went through that particular trial, but most importantly the story allows me to laugh about the past. The book gets a little dark towards the end, which is fitting.

This is an easy, entertaining read. As soon as I get the unassigned time, I'm going to start on his next book.
If you are looking for something different, with some humor and a dark side too, this is the book for you. Mr. Rogneby’s take on the world of suburbia is truly unique and if you have been there you’ll definitely recognize the trials and tribulations the protagonist suffers through. At the heart of the story though is the Minivandians love of home and family. This book was a very pleasant surprise for me and I’ll bet you would enjoy it too.
While I waited for the paperback edition to arrive, I downloaded a copy. This is an absolute gem of the book--full of the humorous elements similar to those I loved in the Discworld series of books, then woven into a world that's so much like ours, but with magical foes and much more interesting tools. The author has taken the best elements of the short pieces he has written on the web and fleshed them out with great wit and detail, into a full length and engaging narrative. This is a book I will definitely read again, before passing on to my child.
--L.B. Johnson - Author of "The Book of Barkley".
I picked up Tales of the Minivandians by Tom Rogneby and was tickled with the sweet and funny vignettes. Told by a Bard, they are done in the style of medieval or Renaissance-reenactment stories. But the Bard uses high technology like holograms in his tellings, letting us have a glimpse of a very strange far-future world in which present day is history, but as if only the SCA and such survived some cataclysm to repopulate the world. The Minivandian, of course, is a suburban guy with a wife and kids, but it’s been a little altered in retelling over the passage of years…
I’d recommend these for when you only have a few minutes, or as a palate-cleanser in between other books. Reading them all at once could be a bit cloying but one at a time they are fun and a little mental puzzle to deduce the setting of a world from few clues.
